18 for 2018

18 in 2018

I’ve just discovered the Happier Podcast with Gretchen Rubin and her sister Elizabeth Craft. The podcast discusses good habits and life hacks to bring more happiness into your life. The Happier podcast has been listed in many best podcast lists. In June 2017 the New Yorker said of the duo that, “Their voices remind you that life is a human project that were all experimenting with.” When you listen to the sisters you do get a really authentic sense of them assessing various tips and techniques for being happier. Let’s face who who doesn’t want to welcome a little more happiness into their lives.

Episode 147 encourages listeners to create a goals list of 18 things that you want to achieve in 2018. Gretchen’s list included weekly adventures with her daughter to fixing her headset.

I absolutely adored this idea, for several years I have kept a 100 list. It’s a very similar idea from artist and author Leonie Dawson. Leonie encouraged people to compile a list of 100 things that they wanted to achieve that year. Since I have been keeping goal lists I have certainly achieved more. Anything that I don’t keep I re-evaluate and see if I do still want to achieve that particular goal and then just roll it over. It’s important to remember that these lists are just tools to support you, NOT sticks to beat yourself with.

What I like about 18 for 2018 is that it’s less intimidating than trying to come up with 100 ideas in one go (my Leonie list started with 60 goals some big, some small). Selecting 18 is a bit more manageable. If you have a larger list I also think it can be a good way of prioritising the goals that are the most important to you.
